Impact Low-Tech
Impact Low-tech is a place where we spread awareness about the benefits of simpler technology and document low-tech solutions specifically tailored to the African continent.
About Us
We made it our mission to improve living standards in African communities
Impact Low-Tech is a project founded in 2022 to address the growing problem of e-waste in Cameroon and the increasing digital divide created by high-technology. Like many countries from the Global South, Cameroon has acquired high tech products over years.
Unfortunately, many communities are now marginalized because of lack of access to technology that could improve their lives, or are inversely, suffering from the accumulation of non-degradable electronic waste in their communities. Impact Low-tech is a place where we spread awareness about the benefits of simpler technology and document low-tech solutions specifically tailored to the African continent.
Our Story
About The Founder
Estelle OWONO BILO’O
Estelle OWONO BILO’O is the founder of
Impact Low-Tech. With a background in
journalism and mass communications, she
made her way through the cameroonian
journalistic field and landed a job as digital
communications specialist at the Presidency of
the Republic of Cameroon.
She’s always been inspired by learning new
things, which is why she expanded her
traditional expertise in journalism to studying a
wide range of disciplines related to the digital
field. Understanding the importance of the
digital field as a source of opportunity for
africans, she has been advocating for digital
literacy for marginalized Cameroonians.
Along the way, OWONO BILO’O crossed path with the Low-Tech Lab Yaoundé who opened her world
to the low-tech solutions.
Having lived both in Europe and Africa, she saw first-hand the damages caused the accumulation of
electronic waste and the digital divide created by the reality of high technology.
Working in the LOW-TECH LAB Yaoundé, OWONO BILO’O saw how low-tech could be applied to a
problem of existential importance: improving the living standards of impoverished and rural communities
in an unstable world dealing with the twin challenges of electronic waste and poverty.
Hoping to create change in her country, Estelle OWONO BILO’O founded the Impact Low-Tech
initiative, a digital plateform where she’s spreading awareness on the importance of using low-techs in
Cameroon (and Africa) and documenting the low-tech solutions specifically-tailored to the Cameroonian
environment.
